FAQ
Buying and compatibility questions.
Buying
What does it cost?
ALIGN is €39 once, EDIT is €49 once, and ALIGN + EDIT is €69 once, €19 less than buying both. No subscription. Prices include VAT. You buy through Lemon Squeezy, which shows the tax amount at checkout.
For the first two weeks after launch there is an introductory price: €29 for ALIGN, €39 for EDIT and €55 for ALIGN + EDIT. Checkout charges it directly; there is no code to enter.
Are the installers signed?
Yes. The macOS installer is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, and the Windows installer is signed with a verified code-signing certificate. macOS and Windows open them without security warnings.
Will there be refunds?
Yes. We plan a 14-day compatibility refund. Email contact@null.audio within 14 days of purchase, tell us what happened and what you are running, and let us make one reasonable support attempt.
If the product still does not work as advertised on a supported or tested setup, we will refund the purchase in full and deactivate the licence. The voluntary policy does not promise compatibility with unsupported setups. Statutory consumer rights are unaffected.
How does licence activation work?
You get a licence key with your purchase. Paste it into the Licenses page of the null.audio app. There is no account and no subscription. Each product licence works on two computers at once; the same applies to each product in the bundle.
After activation, null.audio works without the internet. To move a licence to another computer, deactivate it on the old one or email us. Activation sends the key and an activation ID to Lemon Squeezy. It does not send audio, project or session data.
Compatibility
Does Ableton Live support ARA?
No. Ableton Live 12 doesn't host ARA plug-ins, so Melodyne and VocAlign can't read your clips directly the way they do in Cubase, Studio One or REAPER. null.audio fills that gap: it runs an ARA host next to Live and connects it to your Arrangement clips. ALIGN brings VocAlign into Ableton, EDIT brings Melodyne, SpectraLayers, RePitch, Vovious and VoiceAssist. More on ARA in Ableton Live.
Does null.audio work without an ARA plug-in?
No. null.audio connects Ableton Live to ARA plug-ins you already own. ALIGN needs VocAlign Pro or Standard. EDIT needs an ARA editor such as Melodyne, SpectraLayers, RePitch, Vovious or NoiseWorks VoiceAssist. Neither is included.
How does ALIGN use VocAlign's ARA mode in Ableton?
Ableton Live doesn't support ARA. null.audio runs an ARA host in the background and connects it to your clips in Live. Select the Guide and the Dub, press ALIGN, and VocAlign Pro or Standard opens with both already in it, with no realtime capture. Shape the alignment, then Commit the result back to the same Live Set.
Live itself isn't changed: the null.audio app hosts VocAlign, and Commit is the point where the finished alignment becomes audio in your Live Set. What gets installed.
How do I use ARA plugins in Ableton Live?
Ableton Live doesn't support ARA. null.audio runs an ARA host in the background and connects it to your clips in Live. With EDIT, select a clip and press EDIT: it opens in Melodyne, SpectraLayers, RePitch, Vovious or NoiseWorks VoiceAssist. The editor follows Live's transport, and the EDIT Bridge plays your edit in the Live mix in real time. Commit returns the finished audio to Arrangement View.
Live itself isn't changed: the null.audio app hosts the editor. What gets installed.
What actually gets installed?
One null.audio.amxd device in your Live Set and one small app, shared by both
products. The device carries dedicated ALIGN and EDIT views, so you do not install a second app
for the other workflow.
The installer also adds the EDIT Bridge, a small plug-in that lets you hear your edits in Live. You only need it for EDIT: to use EDIT on a track, add the EDIT Bridge to that track. An update includes null.audio, its Live device and the EDIT Bridge, so they keep working together.

You still need your own licence for the third-party tool. That means VocAlign Pro or Standard for ALIGN, and an ARA editor for EDIT: Melodyne, SpectraLayers, RePitch, Vovious or NoiseWorks VoiceAssist. Neither is included.
Do I need Ableton Live Suite?
You need Max for Live, because the null.audio device is a Max for Live device. Max for Live comes with Live 12 Suite. With Live 12 Standard you can add it by buying Ableton's Max for Live add-on. Live Intro and Live Lite can't run Max for Live devices.
Whichever edition you have, it needs to be Live 12.3 or later. On an older Live the null.audio device says so and doesn't start.
What will I need to run EDIT?
Ableton Live 12.3 or later (Live 12 Suite, or Live 12 Standard with the Max for Live add-on), macOS 14 or later or Windows 11, and your own licence for an ARA editor (VST3). EDIT works with Melodyne, SpectraLayers, RePitch, Vovious and NoiseWorks VoiceAssist. It does not include an editor and does nothing without one.
You can add other ARA editors yourself. They show as "untested" until we have tested them. The exact versions we test with are under tested setups.
What will I need to run ALIGN?
Ableton Live 12.3 or later (Live 12 Suite, or Live 12 Standard with the Max for Live add-on), macOS 14 or later or Windows 11, and your own VocAlign: VocAlign 7 Pro or Standard, or VocAlign 6 Pro, and on macOS also VocAlign 6 Standard. ALIGN does not include VocAlign and does nothing without it.
With every one of them, Standard included, ALIGN aligns up to eight Dubs against one Guide at once.
The exact versions we test with are under tested setups. A newer VocAlign version should work too; the null.audio app marks it "Not yet tested". The refund policy covers you if ALIGN does not work as advertised on a tested setup.
Is there a Windows version?
Yes. ALIGN and EDIT run on Windows 11 as well as macOS, from the same purchase and the same licence key. The full workflow is tested on Windows 11 with Live 12.4.6; the tested setups list the plug-in versions.
What has ALIGN been tested on?
On macOS: Ableton Live 12.3, 12.4.3 and 12.4.5 with Max 9.1.4 on an Apple M4 Pro, with VocAlign 6 Pro 6.1.30 and 6.1.32 and Standard 6.1.20, and VocAlign 7.0.11 Pro and Standard on macOS 27.0.1. On Windows 11: Live 12.4.6 with VocAlign 7 Pro and Standard (7.0.4 and 7.0.11), and VocAlign 6 Pro (6.1.29 and 6.1.32). A newer VocAlign version should work too; the app marks it "Not yet tested". Intel Macs have not been tested. The full list is under tested setups.
What has EDIT been tested on?
On macOS: Ableton Live 12.3, 12.4.3 and 12.4.5 with Max 9.1.4 on an Apple M4 Pro, with Melodyne 5.4.2, Vovious 1.0.16, SpectraLayers 10.0.50 and RePitch 2.0.102, including realtime playback in Live, Commit and Revert. NoiseWorks VoiceAssist works too. On Windows 11: Live 12.4.6 with Melodyne, SpectraLayers, Vovious, VoiceAssist and RePitch. Intel Macs have not been tested. The full list is under tested setups.
Can I use Melodyne in Ableton Live?
Yes. EDIT opens a selected clip in Melodyne from Ableton Live, plays your edit in the Live mix in real time, and Commits the finished audio back to Arrangement View. You need your own Melodyne licence.
EDIT also works with SpectraLayers, RePitch, Vovious and NoiseWorks VoiceAssist. See null.audio EDIT.
I use VocAlign for vocal takes. Do I need EDIT too?
Only if you also want pitch, timing or performance editing. ALIGN and EDIT solve different problems: ALIGN matches a Dub take to a Guide take directly from the selected clips. EDIT opens a single clip in an ARA editor so you can hear changes against the mix and reshape the performance itself.
They are separate entitlements. Buying one does not give you the other. Both share the same
null.audio.amxd device once installed.
Does it work in Session View?
Not yet. Both ALIGN and EDIT currently work in Arrangement View only.
Can I use warped clips?
Yes. Turn on "Auto-prepare warped clips" on the ALIGN or EDIT panel. null.audio then prepares warped, stretched and transposed clips with Live's own Consolidate and puts your clip back. The committed clip comes back with Warp off, in time with the Set. On macOS this needs the Accessibility permission.
Can I map ALIGN and EDIT to keys or a MIDI controller?
Yes. Turn on Mappings on the null.audio device and map Set Guide, Set Dub, Add Dub, Align, Open Editor, Close Session, Commit and Revert with Live's Key Map or MIDI Map, like any other Live control.
Do the device and panels match Live's theme?
Yes. The null.audio device and the ALIGN and EDIT panels take their colours from Live, so they look at home in Live's light and dark themes, and change with them.

Using ALIGN
How do I use VocAlign in Ableton Live without realtime capture?
With ALIGN. Select a Guide clip (the take everything should follow) and press Set Guide, then a Dub clip (the take to tighten against it) and press Set Dub. Press ALIGN, and VocAlign Pro or Standard opens with both already in it, so there is nothing to route and nothing to play in. When it sounds right, press Commit: only the aligned Dub goes back on its track.
You can add up to eight Dubs to the same Guide, with any VocAlign ALIGN works with, Standard included. Find Dubs lists the clips under the Guide and ticks the vocal takes for you, VocAlign opens with all of them, and one Commit puts every aligned Dub back on its own track.
Do I need VocAlign Pro to align several Dubs?
No. ALIGN aligns up to eight Dubs against one Guide with every VocAlign it works with: VocAlign 7 Pro or Standard, VocAlign 6 Pro, and on macOS also VocAlign 6 Standard. Find Dubs lists the clips under the Guide and ticks the vocal takes, VocAlign opens with all of them, and one Commit puts every aligned Dub back on its own track. See Several Dubs at once.
Can ALIGN find my doubles by itself?
Yes. Right after Set Guide, the panel offers the clips under the Guide on vocal tracks, and Find Dubs lists every clip there with the vocal takes ticked. After a Commit in a saved Set, ALIGN also remembers which tracks held the Dubs for that Guide track and ticks them first next time.
To skip even that press, tick Align found Dubs right after Set Guide at the bottom of the panel: one press on Set Guide adds the Dubs and opens VocAlign with all of them. Nothing in Live changes until you press Commit. See Several Dubs at once.
Why does aligning vocals in Ableton take so long?
Because ordinary plug-in workflows only receive audio as it plays. On a session with doubles, harmonies and revisions, the realtime capture pass keeps coming back.
Run VocAlign as an ordinary plug-in in Live. Put VocAlign on the tracks and record the Guide and Dubs into it while the section plays (VocAlign 6 also needs the Guide on its sidechain). Every new take or revision repeats that realtime pass.
Or use a DAW that has ARA. That avoids the capture pass, but you leave the Ableton session to do the work and then place the audio back in it.
ALIGN starts directly from the selected Guide and Dub and keeps the result in Ableton. See the comparison.
Can I not just align vocals in Ableton already?
You can line them up by hand, and for one short phrase that is often quicker. It stops being quick once you have a stacked chorus, a doubled verse and a handful of ad-libs.
The ordinary tool-assisted route means running VocAlign as a plug-in and recording the Guide and Dub into it in realtime (VocAlign 6 also needs the Guide on its sidechain), or exporting to a DAW with ARA and bringing the result back. ALIGN starts from the clips already in Live: choose a Guide and a Dub, shape the alignment, and Commit the result to the arrangement you were already working in.
Using EDIT
What does null.audio EDIT do?
EDIT opens a clip from your Arrangement in an ARA editor without leaving Ableton Live. You edit the pitch, timing or performance, hear every change in the mix in real time, and Commit the result to Arrangement View. Revert puts the original clip back.
It works with Melodyne, SpectraLayers, RePitch, Vovious and NoiseWorks VoiceAssist. Choose the editor from the EDITOR menu on the EDIT panel.
Can't I just send the clip to Melodyne and bring it back?
You can. Set Melodyne as Live's sample editor, or use a tool that sends the clip out and brings it back, and the clip opens with nothing to record in. But the editor works outside the Live mix: you hear the clip by itself while you edit, and you hear it with the rest of the song only once it's back in Live.
EDIT also opens the clip straight away, and the EDIT Bridge plays every edit in the Live mix in real time. You decide on pitch and timing while you hear the vocal against the track, and Commit only when it sounds right.
Why do people leave Ableton to edit vocals?
Because printing an edit in Live can mean bouncing the whole device chain or moving the Dub to a clean track first. The usual export route also takes the edit away from the mix.
EDIT keeps the editor and Live on the same timeline, so you hear the edit against the mix while you work. See the workflow.
Can I switch between Melodyne and other editors?
Yes. Choose the editor from the EDITOR menu on the EDIT panel. Close the current session first, then open the next clip in the editor you want.
Will my ARA editor work if it isn't on the list?
It may. EDIT is tested with Melodyne, SpectraLayers, RePitch, Vovious and NoiseWorks VoiceAssist, but other ARA editors (VST3) can work too. Add yours on the Plug-Ins page of the null.audio app; it shows as "untested" until we have tested it.
If you try one, email us and tell us how it went. We use those reports to decide which editors to test next.
Does EDIT change the other clips on my track?
No. The EDIT Bridge plays your edit only where that clip sits. Everything else on the track, and in the rest of your Set, plays as normal. Your original clip stays unchanged until you press Commit.
Can I edit several clips at once?
Not yet. EDIT opens one clip at a time. Editing several clips together, the way Cubase and Studio One do it in Melodyne, is what I'm building next. See the roadmap.
Support and updates
Do I pay again for updates?
No. Updates to a product you own are included, with no separate fee. null.audio checks for updates once a day and tells you when one is ready; nothing is downloaded or installed without you. Download the new version from null.audio/download and install it over the old one; your licence stays active.
Because ALIGN and EDIT share one app and one null.audio.amxd device, an update covers every
product you own, and the EDIT Bridge, together.
How do I get help, and how fast will you reply?
Email contact@null.audio. We aim to reply within 48 hours.
Include which product (ALIGN or EDIT), your Ableton Live version, your OS and version, and what you were doing when it went wrong. It usually saves a round trip.
Do the products phone home or collect data?
ALIGN and EDIT send no analytics and no crash reports. This website counts visits without cookies and runs no ad tracking. If you email support or buy later, those services receive the information needed to reply or fulfil the purchase.
The release's key activation talks to Lemon Squeezy only to activate or deactivate a licence. It sends the licence key and activation instance, not audio, project or session data. See activation and the privacy page.
